Honest Reflections on Aging & Life

Chewing on the Bible as I Get Older

When Life’s Mileage Makes You Wonder

Later in life, I’m finding the big questions don’t whisper anymore—they shout. Faith, purpose, what comes after this life… these thoughts visit more frequently as my knees creak and reading glasses become non-negotiable.

I’ve tried living by Christian values—dodging the major sins, mostly—but I’ll be straight with you: I’ve never really studied the Bible properly. Just never made the time.

Sound familiar?

Now I find myself searching for something solid as the calendar pages flip faster each year. Not out of fear (okay, maybe a little), but from a growing sense that there’s wisdom I’ve been skating past.

Why Dust Off That Bible Now?

I’m no preacher—just a guy trying to figure things out like everyone else. But lately, I’ve been thinking: maybe there’s something to finding God in those ancient pages that my hurried younger self missed.

It’s not about becoming perfect. It’s about finding some quiet in the noise. Some direction when the path ahead looks foggy.

I’ve started small—dropping the occasional verse into my morning routine, like testing water temperature before diving in.

Friends tell me it steadies them—gives them a north star when life spins sideways. I’m late to this game, but hey—better now than never, right?

Anyone else come to this stuff later in life?

How I’m fumbling through this…

Let’s keep this simple. No seminary degree required: Grab a readable version—NIV or ESV don’t make my brain hurt.

BibleGateway.com has become my friend—I can search for specific verses when something’s on my mind, even listen to them read aloud when my eyes are tired. The YouVersion app offers 5-minute reading plans. No excuses when it takes longer to brew my coffee.

Start small—one chapter, jot down what sticks. What speaks to you. Mix it with something you already enjoy. For me, it’s that first cup of morning coffee before the house wakes up.

This shouldn’t feel like homework. Think of it as a conversation, not a textbook.

I’m still embarrassed I can only remember about half the Ten Commandments—but I’m working on it. Have you ever cracked those pages open and been surprised by what you found?

Words That Stick to My Ribs

Some verses ring like old bells when you finally pay attention:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…” (John 3:16). The heart of it all, right there.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1). Peace in seven simple words.

“Come to me, all you who are weary…” (Matthew 11:28). An invitation for tired souls like mine.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1). Steady ground when everything else shifts.

I’m starting with these, letting them sink in slowly. Like savoring good food instead of rushing through drive-thru meals.

What words have found their way into your heart over the years?

The Ten Commandments—Maps, Not Just Rules

I recently revisited these foundational guidelines:

  1. No other gods.
  2. No idols.
  3. Don’t misuse God’s name.
  4. Keep the Sabbath holy.
  5. Honor your folks.
  6. No murder.
  7. No adultery.
  8. No stealing.
  9. No lying.
  10. No coveting.

They’re not just rules to follow—they’re pathways to peace.

I’ve stumbled on several (haven’t we all?), but they’re worth pondering at this stage of life. Less about scoring points, more about finding solid ground.

Finding Your Own Rhythm

Some days I read alone. Other days, I think talking with others might help untangle the harder passages.

Forums like ChristianBook.com offer guides when I’m stuck.

I’ve started with a simple prayer before reading: “Open my heart to whatever I need to hear today.” No fancy words needed.

Less cramming for a test, more listening for whispers of wisdom. What approach might work for you?

Moments of Quiet Among the Noise

When life’s chaos cranks up, I’m finding strange comfort in Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything… and the peace of God… will guard your hearts.”

Something steady in unsteady times. What brings you that kind of peace?

Movies That Make It Real

Sometimes I connect through stories on screen:

The Ten Commandments (1956)—that Red Sea parting still gets me.

Ben-Hur (1959)—a redemption story that hits different at my age.

The Passion of the Christ (2004)—raw in ways that make you think.

They bring dusty history to life, make me curious about the source material.

Any films that sparked your interest in deeper things? Have you seen any of these movies?

Let’s Talk—No Judgment Zone

I’m just a guy considering the Bible as a way to steady my soul, to turn midnight overthinking into something more like faith.
